December 2006

In December of 2006, Mr. Luan Van Le, a producer and director was in the New York metropolitan area to film a series of interviews for use in his feature length documentary on Taekwon-Do. A key subject that was interviewed was Grandmaster Hwang Kwang Sung. Grandmaster Hwang sat for over six hours contributing his valuable knowledge that he has gained in his six decades of his martial Arts experience. What helps make Grandmaster Hwang a good source of information was not only his long association with General Choi Hong Hi and the International Taekwon-Do Federation, but the special relationship he had with the Founder, along with the various positions he held for the ITF under General Choi. These positions included President of the Korean American Taekwon-Do Union, Secretary General of the ITF, Chairman of the Merger Committee and Special Assistant to General Choi.

The extensive interview was conducted by Master George Vitale, a Director of the ITF nominated by General Choi. Some of the areas covered were the early days of Taekwon-Do, the ITF and Grandmaster Hwang’s training. Other topics included merger talks with the WTF, Olympic status, the General’s last wishes and his reasons from resigning his positions with the ITF. The interview took place at Hwang’s Taekwon-Do School in Manchester, Ct. Additional collaboration may be scheduled in the future. The following is some information on this exciting project.

In Our Moral Armor: The Taekwon-Do Journey we will travel to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Toronto, London, Seoul, Pyongyang, and across continents to discover the history and the developing future of Taekwon-Do. We will explore the people and events which bind to unravel a complex story of unnerving internal Taekwon-Do politics and corruption, the struggle of Korea’s national identity, and current issues of the two Koreas in the global landscape. But ultimately, we will witness the tenets (courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and indomitable spirit.) and underlying philosophy of Taekwon-do expressed through its visionaries in their attempts to follow an oath, "I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-do. I shall respect my instructors and seniors. I shall never misuse Taekwon-do. I shall be a champion of freedom and justice. I shall build a more peaceful world."

The feature length documentary, Our Moral Armor: The Taekwon-Do Journey, will chronicle the story using cinema verité, archival footage, new interview footage, scene recreations using Hollywood-style visual effects, and stylistic graphics to show a fascinating narrative that has yet to be told. Featured interviews include the late General Choi Hong Hi, Grandmasters Nam Tae Hi, Sun Duk Song, Rhee Ki Ha, Choi Chang Keun, Kong Young Il, Hwang Kwang Sung, Park Jong Soo, along with other critical figures.
